Final Destination 2 - Film Trailer Analysis

File:Final destination two.jpg

The film trailer starts with a little boy in another car putting his two toy cars together as if to signify there was going to be a crash. This sets the tone for the rest of the clip and suggests to the audience that they should expect it to happen.

The words 'FOR EVERY ACTION..." then shows with a black background and white writing. This suggests from the word ACTION that something bad is about to happen and also with what just happened with the boy could start to unfold because the brightness of the white "FOR EVERY ACTION", which could suggest life, is surrounded by the blackness, which could suggest death.

It then cuts to the lead girl in the film just driving her red Chrysler on the road next to a lorry. As he goes to overtake, her friend asks "Isn't that guy drinking beer?". This suggests that the guy might already be drunk if he is drinking whilst driving. It may also suggest that he could be one of the causes of the accident that could be waiting ahead of them. It doesnt show that the guy is drunk but if he drinks on the road, it may affect his vision and concentration and therefore make him swerve and even crash his car, causing mayhem and potential danger for all the other travellers on that road.

Then the words "THERE IS A REACTION" shows up yet again in the white text and deep black background. This is yet another indication of the difference between life and death. Also, I think that the word "REACTION" is quite important. This is because it links well with the word "ACTION" from the last piece of text. This suggests that if there is an action, how or what would be the reaction of the characters, that's even if they have to time to react before something is going to happen.

It then cuts to a shot of inside of the car with the girls laughing at something, which I'm guessing is about the man they just drove past drinking beer in the lorry. This shows that despite what could lie ahead, they're trying to convince themselves that nothing can go wrong and they can enjoy where they are going to. She also buckles up her seatbelt which could suggest a number of things. One thing which I think could be an important indication of this is that she is almost expecting something to happen and she is trying to keep herself safe by putting on her seatbelt. At first she seemed uncomfortable driving and perhaps kept her seatbelt off because she thought that if she got into trouble, she could get out of the car quickly, but by buckling up, it proves she now feels comfortable driving and is starting to relax and enjoy her trip.

Then the words "FOR EVERY CAUSE" shows yet again in bright white writing and a black background. The word "CAUSE" is important because it suggests to the audience that something is about to happen and someone else is going to be the cause of it. It also links with the other words "ACTION" and "REACTION". This is because it's almost telling us that something is going to happen.

Then it cuts to a part where a guy in a black lycra suit is on a motorbike speeding straight through the middle of two rows of cars on the highway. This suggest that he is in a rush and that could also suggest that he is in a rush to get out of traffic because he knows that something is going to happen and that he wants to try and avoid it.

Then the words "THERE IS AN EFFECT" shows up in the now traditional white font and black background. This suggest to the audience that something dramatic is going to happen in the next small clip. This also suggests that the motorcyclist is going to cause some unrest on the road with the way that he is speeding through the centre of the lanes. He is also going at a substancial amount of speed which links with the word "EFFECT" because it suggest that in the next clip, it will effect something to possible even start a crash.

Then it cuts to a car shot of the motorbike speeding past the window which the women driving the red Chrysler, is paying more attention to that incase it cut in front of her. This is proven when the lorry that is driving behind her uses his horn because she may have been slowing down to avoid losing control and knocking the guy of his bike. The lorry driver sounded the horn because he was in no mood to be driving slow as he was carry heavy goods, which were the big tree logs that were loaded on the back. This caused the red Chyrsler that the woman was driving swerving to avoid the lorry smashing into the back of her car causing a massive accident that has been brewing since the early stages of the clip. It also suggests that the woman was caught by surprise as she swerved to avoid the lorry, which also made her risk her and her friends safety as she didnt check for traffic in the other lane. This also suggests that there is danger on the roads.

Then the words "FOR EVERY BEGINNING" shows up yet again with the white font and black background. This suggests that the next clip will show the beginning of the accident that has been building up through the clips. This also links in well with the word beginning as explained above.

It then cuts to a police officer in his car doing the normal routine of being on duty and possibly looking for trouble on the roads of the city. It then has a close up of a cup of coffee that the officer has just brought that starts shaking because of the roads and then eventually knocks over onto his leg. This forces his to shout ouch because the coffee was still obviously boiling hot and was burning into his skin. This could have caused an accident in itself because it could have caused his leg to have a spasm because of the surprise and burning of the skin that the coffee made. Just before the clip ends, it shows him taking his eyes off the road so that he could find something to mop up the mess that the coffee made of his trousers. This suggests that if anything was to happen in the space of a few seconds like a crash up ahead, he would not know and instantly cause a scene because he wouldnt have been paying attention.

Then the words "THERE IS AN END" shows up, yet again in the white font and black background. The words "IS" and "END" suggests to the audience that something is about to happen and that the chain of build up clips to set the tone are about to come to an end and that the major exciting elements of the trailer are about to kick off. It could also suggest that it starts with the police officer because he wasnt paying attention in the last clip and could now be the cause of anything that is going to happen in the next clip.

The next clip starts with the chains coming loose of the back of the lorry and all the piles of tree logs that were stored on the back start to slide of the side and onto the road. This immidiately suggests danger to the people on the road and that it is going to be the start of the accident. It then cuts to the police officer in his car finishing cleaning up the mess his coffee made and look back at the road to find one of the logs bouncing on the road right in front of him. This shows us that he is going to get killed by the log as its going to kill him by hitting him directly in the face as it smashes through the front windscreen. This then leaves nobody to drive the car and it will swerve as the controls will reach meltdown, spelling disaster for everyone that is driving behind.

Then the words "BECAUSE ONCE FATE" show up in the white font and black background. This suggests to the audience that maybe the accident was always going to happen whether or not these people were going to be involved. That explains why the word "FATE" was used because it was always going to be fate that the accident was going to happen.

The next clip starts with a boy losing a ring down his sink and his trying his hardest to get it back. This suggests that the ring means alot to him and that could be in many different ways. It could be an engagement that he bought so that he can propose to his girlfriend, it could also be a ring that he went out and bought because he had the money to pay for it and wanted to add to his jewellery or it could possibly be a gift from someone alive or dead in either his family or even from his friends. It obviously means alot to him otherwise I doubt that he'd try to get it back. As he puts his hand into the plughole, it shows a blade which suggests that he might be the next victim and the blade would cut his hand off and he would bleed to death.

Then the words "IS SET IN MOTION" shows up in the typical white font and black background. The word "MOTION" links well with the word from the last bit of narration "FATE". This is because the fate of the people involved in the car accident could be set into motion and because real, which is what the clip is showing. So any kind of fate will because real.

The next clip shows the guy on the motorbike fall of the bike as he desperately tries to slide and avoid the debris that is coming his way. When he comes off, he slides across the road and he collides with one of the logs that fell of the back of the truck. Also because of the way he slid, he is facing in the way of oncoming traffic that will be coming his way and it was be an straight hit if anything was to come his way. This suggests to the audience that he is in danger and that is proves when it shows the motorbike sliding towards his at full speed with his having no chance to get out the way and then it will immediately kill him making him the next victim of the crash.

The words "IT CANNOT" then appear, also yet again in the white font and the black background. This again links with the words "FATE" and "MOTION". This is because the people that are being wiped out in this crash simply cannot stop the fate turning into motion and therefore they are all going to die what ever happens.

It then cuts to a guy in hospital, already seriously injured, trying to talk and move but being unable to because of the amount of drugs and pain that he is in. He's trying to warn the danger to the blonde woman, but is unable to talk. It then quickly cuts to two oxygen canisters leaking fluid and then again cuts quickly to a candle that is lit by a flame. This suggests that the flame from the candle is about to meet with the toxic fumes from the oxygen tank, causing a massive explosion that blows up the whole area and kills them all. It then quickly cuts to a shot of the womans face which shows the fear and realisation of whats going on and knowing that she dont have time to react and get herself to safety. This tells the audience that she and the man in the room are both going to die in the explosion. This is proven when the room explodes with a shot of the fire tearing through the corridor.

Then the words "BE STOPPED" shows up in the white font and black background. This links well with the words "FATE" and "CANNOT". This is because it's telling us that fate cannot be stopped and that everyone involved in the opening shots are all going to die as they were all part of the road accident at the start of the clips.

It then cuts to the main women in the red Chrysler driving her car over one of the logs, which cause the car to jolt to itside and topple over sideways. It then cuts quickly to the car doing barrell rolls over to the side of the road before reaching a halt on its side. This suggests that there is no way out for any possible survivors in the car which contains the girl and her friends. It then cuts to showing that the main girl and her friends survived the original crash but then has a close up of the girls face showing her gasping. It then cuts to a shot of the lorry coming straight at her at full speed, giving the girl and her friends no chance of escape and for them to be the final victims of the crash. It the quickly cuts back to the girl screaming as she knows its coming to an end.

Then the words "OR CAN IT?" appear on screen which eventually turns out to be the final time the white font and black background come onto the screen. This suggests to the audience that the font and background colour suggests a chain of deaths because the white font was always surrounded by the black background, which tells us that death is surrounding life in every part of the trailer. It shows that however hard you try to avoid death, it is always going to catch up with you one way or another. The line "OR CAN IT?" combines well with the other lines "IT CANNOT" and "BE STOPPED". This suggests to the audience that the chain can be broken, if you can possibly figure out a way to stop death and it's design. This surely cannot be possible for any human being though as death will always catch up with them in the end, whether its sooner or later, theres no escape.

The next clip is a 20 second slot of montage editing that is using dialogue rather than a soundtrack that was being used for the first minute of the clip. It opens with the women from the red Chrysler being in a close up shot of her face, showing her with a tear in her eye and gasping for breath as if she had just had a bad dream or vision. The vision that she had was the clips shown in the previous minute of the trailer as if she lived through what had happened throughout the story and then came back to try and avoid it so that she and everyone else involved would survive and live their lives. Throughout this montage shows clips from the story of every character involved in the film and the ones in particular that are involved in the car accident at the start of the trailer. It shows the audience the most exciting parts of the trailer so that they stayed entertained and want to watch more, therefore forcing them to watch the full movie when it gets released. It also shows that death slowly catches up with each of them and that there is no chance of surviving. Also characters from the first movie appear in the second such as the blonde character and also the creepy undertaker.

One thing that I didnt mention through the analysis of the clips before the montage was the soundtrack music. The music was parallel sound because it was eerie music that created an atmosphere and set the tone for the rest of the trailer. It also sped up when the editing started to gain a pace as the trailer was starting to reach its climax before the start of the montage editing kicked in. This made the audience want to continue watching the trailer even after it had finished because the music had such an effect on the build up and the creation of the atmosphere. Also I thought that the dialogue used in the montage editing also combined quite well with the montage editing because it told the audience what's going on and made it clear to them that they were all somehow going to die whatever happened. It just complimented what was going on on screen.

At the end of the trailer, it showed the name of the film 'Final Destination 2' and then cut to a scene where it told the audience the name of the website in case anybody would want to go and find out more information about the film and then it also typically had a production/distribution logo of who made the film, in this case was New Line Cinema, who is part of the AOL Time Warner Company.

The Matrix

The matrix trailer start with captions "In a ordinary world". The captions are in green and in capitial letters signifying that it isnt an ordinary world . as this continues through its goes to little clips of what we do consider as "normal" contradicting the firstline. then again captions come reading " you do your job" which relates to everyone watching as somoone has worked sometime in their life, but again its in green and capitials which still shows something not quite right. it continues this subtitles and cutting to clips until smething dramtic happens which draws the auidience in. Also the clips shown inbetween the subtitles are very dark and gloomy also adding to the effect that something still isnt quite right.

We then see what we presume as the main character being woken up from some kind of trance or sleep with he caption " as a slave!" this really hooks the auidience into wanting to know more and as theyve related to most of the first part they want to know why they also may be working as a slave. This turn of events makes the audience want to continue watching to see why they might be a slave.
we then see a load of different clips of different people doing what we consider to be "strange or supernatural" with a ,mirror that they can put their hand through and also childrens blocks that float in mid air. this all adds to the effect and now the auidience knowas that something definatly isnt right.

Then the secondary character then says something that makes the audience think because there is no way of proving it, which was "have you ever had a dream that you was so sure was real" and as evry one has dreams this makes the auidence think back on their own lives and makes them link the film to their own life in a different way. he then also says "if you was never to wake from the dream how would you know what was dream and what was real" this hooks the audience as there is no real way to check this and makes them think back over the dreams that they had and this makes them link more with the film and it has a more in depth link and makes them doubt their own experiences and knowledge. also the whole trailer so far has been dark lighting and dark scenes very fast cuts and cut backs which suggests that most of the film will be very fast pased and full of action. the next couple of scenes has the voce over from another scene is shows rain falling which normally suggests in action films that action is going to happen and it also add to the mood that something definatly isnt right keeping the audeince on the edge of their seat. with the added voice over saying " it is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth" this changes what we think of the characters as we now believe them to be good, as we associate the truth with good and the characters on screen want the truth. It then plays on peoples emotions and morals by saying " you are a slave being born into a prison" as the auideince is now linked deeply with this film it makes them think that have they been used as a slave and makes the characters on screen become the protaganists and the auidence now wants them to continue and win the misson that they seem to be on so far.

The nexrt scene is a bit lighter and it relates back tro the auidence with a typical street youd see in a busy town with people in smart clothes leave or arriving to work and as this is saw on a wekly basis the audeince now relates to this further. As he says " the system is our enemy"  we now know that theres a fight and we now know that theres an antaganist but we only know it as "the matrix.

We then cut tp a scene of a child who seems to be some kind of monk, or spirital guide who then says " you must realise the truth" this makes everyone in the auidence ask the same question as the character " what truth" the reply is " theres no spoon", the spoon then seems to melt which would startle the auidence as everyone knows spoons are made out of metal and dont just melt for no reason proving to the auideince that something else is controlling everything.

We then see what seems to be the enemy of the film the antaganist, who says "humans are a desiese" this first line automatically makes us think well what is he then if hes not human and because you cant see his eyes you cant see if he has any adding suspense and mystery to the scene. he then says "Cancer of this planet a plague" this everyone can relate to and know how serious this man/ thing is and makes us think that he must really hate humans as his ext line is "and we are the cure" then cuts to a scene of an explosion this shows the auidence along with the look of the man that he really hates the human race and weants to wipe it out. this makes the auidience root for the protaganist more.

The next scene gtives us an insite to what the matrix is as in the background s has green hollograms with numbers scrolling down showing that the matrix is somekind of computer or machine. when he then says "so your here to save us" it makes the audience warm to the protaganists even more but the next line is " were here to free your brain but i can only show you the door" this shows that its up to one person to try to save everyone and bring them back to reality this highlights one charatcer in particular and makes him the hero so to speak and the one the auidence will root for all the way through. the next scenes show just how in human the bad guys are with the facty that we see one punch through the concrete wall which we know in our minds that it isnt piossible this also adds to show that maybe this world is a dream and things are possible here also he dodges a full clip of bullets adding to the auidences thought of the film ands how theier life may be a dream to. Then its confirmed that this has gone on for a while and now there last hope is with the new agent we saw at the start of the film so that we now know all hope rests on him all throughout the film. then in the last few scenes our hope in the new agent grows as we  see him dodge bullets and then right at the end everything goes into slow motion and he can dodge the bullets with ease. this shows the auidence that he is something special and that theres a good chance at winning. then to finish it off the end title adds to the effect by bieng in computer graphic sort of writing showing the auideince that its something non human that is controlling everything.
